About Catawba Care
The Catawba Care Coalition, as it was originally named, formed in 1994 to serve the HIV+ community in York, Chester and Lancaster counties. Over the years of their service they expanded, became a non-profit, and were able to open up their own on-site clinic. The CCC merged with York County AIDS Prevention Network and the Catawba AIDS Prevention Network and changed their organization’s name to Catawba Care (CC).
CC wanted a site that raised local awareness and education on the issue of HIV and how it’s transmitted. The education of this issue ran the gambit of educating them on this disease and how to prevent it to how and where to find facilities to get tested. They want to both help those who are HIV+ as well as prevent the spread to those who are not.
The Hive’s Collaboration
The Hive took on this project for the Fall 2011 semester. Because of the nature of this site being mainly educational, Hive students wanted to convey the information above through design, organization and informative writing.
The Process
CC already had an existing web site, but they wanted a face-lift to both design and content. We decided to take their already-existing content and fuse it with new information, interviews, videos and other interactive components.
In order to organize the CC’s information in a way friendly to their audience but still fulfilling the needs the CC was seeking, we began with a wire frame. Once we organized the site according to the CC’s specifications and our expertise, the design and content creation was under way.
Special Features
For the sake of user-friendly functionality, we added a few interactive features:
- HIV Testing Center Application: users can type in their zipcode to find out where the nearest center is located
- Interactive FAQ: users can look at questions that are asked a lot, but they are also given the availability to offer and ask more questions
- Social Networks: we also upped CC’s ability to get the awareness of the clinic and testing, and issues surrounding HIV to the public
