What do you hope to get from this experience? I hope to further improve the skills I have obtained not only through the courses I’ve taken at Winthrop, but also those I have gained through my work experience at internships and related jobs. In addition, I would like to use this opportunity to establish new and strong connection with professionals in the Rock Hill and Charlotte area.
What project are you most excited to be working on? In general, I am excited to be a part of any of the projects because they are all benefiting the community in great and unique ways. However, I think I will enjoy the ICYC project the most because of my family background and personal experiences with helping non-English speaking individuals.
What skills do you bring to the team? I have had some experience with design and development, but my strongest skills are that of business and marketing. Also, I am pretty familiar with WordPress. I can work on some SEO projects, but I do not consider myself an expert.

What do you hope to get from this experience? I hope to gain real world experience with actual clients in order to build my portfolio and experience. Another cool aspect of this experience to me is to see how a web team comes together based on their skills and talents to make something great!
What project are you most excited to be working on? I’m most excited about the Friendship 9 site mainly because of the great story behind these 9 guys. I enjoy storytelling through writing, and I would be extremely honored to be a part of helping tell their story to the nation.
What skills do you bring to the team? My background is in the Mass Communication area, so naturally this covers a lot. This includes conceptualizing through not just writing, but video and other interactive media – laying them out and organizing their execution and post-production (not so much the actual production). I also enjoy and excel at design layout.

What project are you most excited to be working on? I have a feeling that the Friendship 9 will present the most challenging (and rewarding) ideas, so I think I’m the most excited about that.(For instance that “interactive timeline” idea being tossed around.)

The Quest Program, also known as Classroom without Walls, is being pioneered by Derek McQuiston and his 5th grade class in Rock Hill, SC. Classroom without Walls is a public school program, housed at York Road Elementary School.

Derek’s idea for this program stemmed from his creative teaching methods and a desire to help children learn outside of a traditional classroom model. With supportive leadership in the School District, Derek is making his “Big Dream” a reality . . .and changing the way children learn.

Being creative with technology, instructional design, and methods of day-to-day instruction are some of the core ideas of Classroom without Walls and allow Derek the flexibility to help his students grow into 21st Century learners.

Website & Development

The Hive provided a means for Derek McQuiston to document his journey through the program as an educator. Through the use of technology in the classroom and at home, students were also able to interactively document their personal journeys on the program’s website.

Internet Marketing

By incorporating various forms of social media into The Quest Program’s website, including Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Vodpod, it allows for the York County community to become more easily aware of the program and provide feedback.

The Catawba Care Coalition, as it was originally named, formed in 1994 to serve the HIV+ community in York, Chester and Lancaster counties. Over the years of their service they expanded, became a non-profit, and were able to open up their own on-site clinic. The CCC merged with York County AIDS Prevention Network and the Catawba AIDS Prevention Network and changed their organization’s name to Catawba Care (CC).

CC wanted a site that raised local awareness and education on the issue of HIV and how it’s transmitted. The education of this issue ran the gambit of educating them on this disease and how to prevent it to how and where to find facilities to get tested. They want to both help those who are HIV+ as well as prevent the spread to those who are not.

The Hive’s Collaboration

The Hive took on this project for the Fall 2011 semester. Because of the nature of this site being mainly educational, Hive students wanted to convey the information above through design, organization and informative writing.

The Process

CC already had an existing web site, but they wanted a face-lift to both design and content. We decided to take their already-existing content and fuse it with new information, interviews, videos and other interactive components.

In order to organize the CC’s information in a way friendly to their audience but still fulfilling the needs the CC was seeking, we began with a wire frame. Once we organized the site according to the CC’s specifications and our expertise, the design and content creation was under way.
